Datascope Medical Device Company Intelligence Report

Datascope conducts its business through four main operating units: Patient Monitoring; Cardiac Assist; Interventional Products; and InterVascular:-

Based in Fairfield, New Jersey, the Cardiac Assist division manufactures intra-aortic balloon (IAB) pumps and IAB catheters. Datascope is the global market leader in IAB pump therapy products. Its line includes the CS100 fully-automated pump with IntelliSync software and the Linear 7.5Fr catheter. The business was also expanded at the beginning of 2006 with the addition of the ClearGlide endoscopic vessel harvesting product line from Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon business.

The Patient Monitoring division is based in Mahwah, New Jersey, and manufactures physiological patient monitors. Datascope has alliances whereby it offers other manufacturers' products with its systems. These include Masimo's Signal Extraction Technology, Nellcor's pulse oximeters, Oridion Medical's MicroStream CO2 technology, Welch Allyn's SureTemp Plus temperature recorder and Aspect Medical Systems' Bispectral Index. The portfolio has also recently been expanded with the launches of the Panorama Gateway that interfaces Datascope's Panorama Central Monitoring System and standalone bedside monitors to a hospital information system/clinical information system and AccuNet wireless software.

Based in Mont Vale, New Jersey, InterVascular offers vascular grafts and patches for reconstructive vascular and cardiovascular surgery. W.L. Gore & Associates is the exclusive distributor of the products in the US. In February 2006, InterVascular became the exclusive distributor of Vascular Innovations' AUF and Extender Cuff stent grafts for treating abdominal aortic aneurysms outside Japan and the US. However, in October 2006, the company recalled the products in Europe. Recently, InterVascular also signed an exclusive five-year agreement to distribute Sorin's peripheral vascular stents outside the US and Japan, and gained an option to acquire the business within two years.

Based in Mahwah, New Jersey, the Interventional Products division manufactures VasoSeal vascular haemostasis devices, the Safeguard manual compression assist device and interventional radiology products such as the ProLumen mechanical thrombectomy device and the ProGuide chronic dialysis catheter.

A fifth division, Genisphere, based in Oakland, New Jersey, manufactures reagents based on a proprietary class of DNA molecules known as 3DNA (Three Dimensional Nucleic Acid) which are used to detect and measure biological substances and are not covered in this profile.

Datascope's operating structure will change at the end of its current fiscal year, ending 30th June 2007, as the company has announced it will exit the vascular closure market and phase-out its Interventional Products business at that time. Datascope has said it is not prepared to accept the current level of expenses from the business, or make the additional investment in distribution needed to move ahead more quickly. The division's losses have offset a significant portion of profit from the company's other businesses for some time, and Datascope believes they would continue to do so in the future.

Datascope will continue to fill customer orders and provide clinical support for its VasoSeal and On-Site vascular closure devices until the end of fiscal 2007. The Cardiac Assist salesforce, augmented by a portion of the Interventional Products salesforce, will continue to sell the Safeguard manual compression assist device. Datascope will also continue sales of ProLumen and ProGuide interventional radiology products while it explores opportunities for the sale or independent distribution of the products. It also plans to finish developing its X-Site vascular closure device and seek the sale or independent distribution of this device, and will also seek a buyer for the On-Site and VasoSeal products. In addition, the company has announced it will reduce operating expenses in its Patient Monitoring division through the elimination of approximately 26 employee positions.
