Biomet Inc, an Indiana, US corporation founded in 1977, is one of the largest orthopaedic medical device companies in the US and worldwide with operations in more than 50 locations throughout the world and distribution in approximately 90 countries. The company's principal subsidiaries include Biomet Orthopedics, Biomet Manufacturing, Biomet Europe, EBI, Biomet 3i, Biomet International, Biomet Microfixation, Biomet Sports Medicine and Biomet Biologics. Biomet and its subsidiaries design and manufacture products used primarily by musculoskeletal medical specialists in both surgical and non-surgical therapy.
In September 2007, Biomet finalised its merger with LVB Acquisition Merger Sub Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of LVB Acquisition Inc, with Biomet being the surviving company of the merger. LVB Acquisition Inc is indirectly-owned by a consortium of private equity funds affiliated with The Blackstone Group, Goldman Sachs, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and TPG Capital. This consortium, along with other investors, contributed US$5,387.5 million of equity in connection with the transaction. The remaining purchase price of US$6,245.4 million included various proceeds from credit facilities.
Prior to its merger with LVB Acquisition, Biomet had experienced an unsettled 18 months. It lost several of its board members and executives, had been involved in litigation with its shareholders and had to restate its financial results for certain periods following the discovery of stock option programme irregularities. Biomet had also previously been in merger talks with its competitor, Smith & Nephew, but this offer was rejected by Biomet.
In the year ended 31st May 2009, Biomet generated sales of US$2,504 million and employed approximately 7,100 people.
