The US Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Market

Positive Clinical Trial Results to Boost Growth

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) devices have been studied clinically since 1998, and have been on the US market since the FDA approval of the first product in 2001.

CRT (also known as biventricular pacing) is used for the prevention and treatment of congestive heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy. CRT devices typically have three leads implanted into one atrium and two ventricles of the heart. The wires that carry the electrical signals in a pacemaker connect to an electrical pulse generator placed under the skin in the upper chest. In addition to the two leads (right atrium and right ventricle) used by a common pacemaker, the CRT device has a third lead that is positioned in a vein on the surface of the left ventricle. This system allows the CRT device to simultaneously stimulate the left and right ventricles and restore a coordinated or "synchronous" heart beat pattern. This is also referred to as "bi-ventricular pacing" because both ventricles are electrically paced at the same time.
